The following images are a small selection of the overall study, they indicate the operational characteristics of each system by showing the mean age of the air within the car park for each system and demonstrate the resulting success of the engineered solution.

Traditional ducted system. 6 air changes/ hour, normal operation. Age of air in car park.

Red areas indicate where the air has been in the car park in
excess of the required regulation time
.

Alternative system. 6 air changes/hour, normal operation. Age of air in car park.
No red areas indicate that all the air is removed within the required time frame.

Traditional ducted system, 10 air changes/hour, fire situation. Age of air in car park.

Red areas indicate where the air has been in the car park in
excess of the required regulation time

EDP Alternate System. 10 air changes/hour, fire situation. Age of air in car park.
No red areas indicates that all the air is removed within the required time frame.

Car Park Ventilation Simulation Analysis

EDP was employed to design services for a 25,000 square metre mechanically ventilated basement car park. EDP designed a ventilation system that presented the client with substantial space and operating cost savings. In order to demonstrate compliance with current Building Regulations, TGD:B, EDP undertook a dynamic simulation of the car park, modeling the effects of the regulated system and the alternative proposal. The results of the study confirmed that the alternative solution performed better in all regards than the regulated system.
